A third and somewhat less-well-known neighbor of Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba in Italy's Northwestern Piemonte, the Monferrato cousin tends to be a bit lighter in weight, though still a country wine of substance:
Visconti Cassinis Ravissa 1995 "Vicara" Barbera del Monferrato Superiore ($9.99) FOOD MATCH: The bright acidity and forward fruit make a happy match with simply grilled lamb chops, which also serve to soften the light tannins in the wine.
