Berger 1997 Kremstal (Austria) Grüner Veltliner ($7.99/1 liter) Best Buy!Under $8 for a liter bottle? You might not expect much from a wine at this price, but this one's a standout. Clear, pale brass in color, it shows the characteristic green-pea and "mineral" scents of Austrian whites; its flavor is dry and fresh, full and citric, surprisingly reminiscent of mandarin oranges, crisp and clean in a long finish. U.S. importer: Milton S. Kronheim & Co. Inc., Washington, D.C.; a Terry Theise Estate Selection. (May 3, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Perfectly matched with fresh asparagus wrapped with prosciutto with a mild aged goat cheese.
