Chateau des Annereaux 1995 Lalande de Pomerol ($13.99)Clear garnet color, this wine shows a startling herbaceous-barnyard character in the aroma, very much like the herbal "garrigues" more familiar in red Rhônes and Languedocs. Once past the odd scent, it offers good, juicy black fruit and tart acidity, but the perfumed herbal notes remain in the finish. I'd be inclined to suspect an infestation with brettanomyces the controversial wild yeast, but it lacks the earthy, "barnyard" or "horsey" notes associated with brett. Pleasant, but very atypical, hard to say how it will evolve with time. U.S. importer: Classic Wine Imports Inc., Boston. (June 15, 1998) FOOD MATCH: Served with boiled brisket, but the perfumed herbal character makes it an iffy match.
