Marques de Velilla 1996 Ribera del Duero ($12.99)Clear, dark ruby. Deep and brooding black-fruit aroma with a whiff of licorice; takes a little sniffing to get it to give up its depths. Tart sour-cherry fruit flavor with a distinct note of black licorice "whips," ripe and full; lemony acidity in a long finish. Lacks the complexity of some of the more pricey Ribera del Dueros, but there's ample character here for a fair price. U.S. importer: Cutting Edge Selections, Cincinnati. (July 11, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: The fruit and acid make it a fine quaff with grilled baby back ribs.
