Louis M. Martini 1993 Lake County Barbera ($11.79)
Dark ruby, with deep cherry-berry fruit and slightly dank oak aromas; full, juicy fruit, simple and ripe. Seems rather one-dimensional at first, but with time in the glass, a surprising transformation occurs: It seems to move forward in time, developing a surprising complexity, and after a couple of hours' exposure to air, "sweet" claret-like aromas similar to Martini's older Cabernets. If you run across this one, give it a little breathing time. (July 24, 2000)
FOOD MATCH: Couldn't be better with char-grilled flank steak.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
