David et Denis Alary 1993 "Font d'Estévenas" Cairanne
Côtes-du-Rhône Villages non-filtré ($14.99) This "old-fashioned" Rhone came very highly recommended, and it's a fine example of the genre indeed, but I still have a hard time getting my mind wrapped around a $15 price tag for a Cotes-du-Rhone. Still, as you'll see from the comparison that it inspires, it might just be worth it ... Inky dark garnet color. Plums, fragrant black pepper and a pleasant whiff of lavendar seguing into garrigues, the natural herbal scent of Provence. Flavors are consistent with the nose, full and earthy; juicy fruit built on a structure of firm, lemon-squirt acidity. It bears an odd but compelling resemblance to Domaine Tempier Bandol, a with-it bottling that commands an even higher price. Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, Pa (Aug. 11, 1997)
