Conti Contini 1993 Sangiovese di Toscana ($9.99) Not quite a Chianti but a varietal Sangiovese from Tuscany, this one's certainly in the same church, if not the same pew. It strikes me as a bit more fruity and acidic, with much less evident oak, than a comparable Chianti, and perhaps a little more one-dimensional; but it's still quite nice, and made a natural match with Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches. Dark ruby color. Pleasant, spicy cherry-pie aromas; tart cherry fruit flavor, ripe and cleansing. The high acidity level, almost sour for sipping alone, made it a natural with spicy Italian beef. Importer: Palace Brands Co., Farmington, Conn. (Aug. 19, 1997)
