Chateau Haut Rian 1998 Bordeaux Sec ($9.99)
Pale straw color, with light citric lemon-lime aromas, pleasantly - if oddly - reminiscent of a 7-Up. Crisp and dry on the palate, tart citrus flavors follow the nose. Clean and moderately long in the finish. U.S. importer: New Castle Imports Inc., Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Oct. 4, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Fine with fettuccine with white clam sauce.
Château Graville-Lacoste 1998 Graves ($11.99)
Pale straw color, with fresh grapefruit aromas and very tart grapefruit-juice flavor, crisp and dry, with a citric snap. Clean and tart, almost sour in a long finish. U.S. importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, Calif. (Oct. 3, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Conchiglie (pasta shells) with butter and garlic, tossed with smoked trout and peas offers a mellow contrast that tames the wine's sharp and almost piercing acidity.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
