Citra 1996 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo ($4.49) It doesn't get much cheaper than this, but to my surprised pleasure, it turned out to be an "interesting" wine, unexpectedly complex and a fine accompaniment to food. It's a clear ruby color. Black cherry and pleasant smoky, tarry aromas. Juicy sour-cherry fruit flavor, crisp and very tart, with an earthy undertone that follows the smoke and tar on the nose. A bit rough for sipping alone, but it went very well with a Filipino chicken-and-pork adobo braised in soy sauce and vinegar with star anise and garlic. Importer: Palm Bay Imports Inc., Boca Raton, Fla. (Oct. 13, 1997)
