The "Oinos o Agapitos" ("Beloved Wine") Website features maps showing the vineyard areas and more information about this ancient wine-producing land. |
We continued our nostalgic return to the world of Greek wines this day, sampling two more of the relatively few Greek bottlings available Between the Coasts:
Boutari 1995 Naoussa ($10.99)
Dark ruby color. Red fruit and earthy "forest floor" notes are reminiscent of a Rhone or Languedoc red. Flavors consistent with the nose, ripe fruit and tart acidity, warming and quaffable, excellent match with lamb. Clean red fruit persists in a medium-long finish. Made from the Xinomavro grape in Macedonia, Northern Greece. Importer: Paterno Imports Ltd., Chicago. (Oct. 29, 1997)
Achaia Clauss 1995 Nemea ($8.99)
Dark garnet. Spicebox and deep blackcurrant aromas carry over to the palate in a balanced flavor that shows plenty of fruit, thought a firm acidic structure and darker fruit flavors make it seem rather more austere than the Naoussa, with the happy tradeoff being that it seems a bit more ageworthy and perhaps "elegant." Quality table wine and a particularly good value. Made from the Agiorgitiko grape in Nemea, which is in the Peloponnese region of Southern mainland Greece. Importer: David Sherman Corp., St. Louis. (Oct. 29, 1997)

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
