Bera 1997 Dolcetto d'Alba ($13.99)
Very dark garnet. Jammy black fruit aromas with floral and smoky notes, rich and complex. Ripe black-fruit flavors tar and smoke and aromatic fennel; crisp acidity and herbal notes in a very long finish. Excellent wine! U.S. importer: Pellegrini Brothers Wines Inc., South San Francisco, Calif. (May 1, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Perfect with a traditional Derby Day dinner given an Italian twist: In place of the usual country ham and cheese grits, we went with thin-sliced prosciutto and a goat-cheese polenta.
Le Ragose 1995 Valpolicella Classico Superiore ($11.99)
FOOD MATCH: The wine's snappy acidity makes it an exceptionally good match with a grilled chicken marinated with lemons.
