Bera Bera 1997 Dolcetto d'Alba ($13.99)
Very dark garnet. Jammy black fruit aromas with floral and smoky notes, rich and complex. Ripe black-fruit flavors tar and smoke and aromatic fennel; crisp acidity and herbal notes in a very long finish. Excellent wine! FOOD MATCH: Perfect with a traditional Derby Day dinner given an Italian twist: In place of the usual country ham and cheese grits, we went with thin-sliced prosciutto and a goat-cheese polenta.

Ragose Le Ragose 1995 Valpolicella Classico Superiore ($11.99)
Made by the ripasso method, refermented on the lees of the previous autumn's stout Amarone, this is no light little Valpolicella. Clear cherry red in color, it breathes fresh, plummy fruit aromas. Ripe and very tart on the palate, if offers a mouthful of cherry-berry fruit framed by lemon-squirt acidity, clean and lasting. U.S. importer: Frederick Wildman and Sons Ltd., NYC. (April 30, 1999)

FOOD MATCH: The wine's snappy acidity makes it an exceptionally good match with a grilled chicken marinated with lemons.
